Simplify Privacy Policy
Reader mode runs entirely on your device. AI simplify is opt-in and only sends the text you select to our AI service when you ask for it.
What We Collect
Only the specific text you select on a page, and only when you have enabled AI simplify and clicked 'Simplify Text'. We do not collect browsing history, page URLs, page content other than what you select, account info, or any identifier. We do not use analytics, cookies, or third-party trackers. AI simplify is OFF by default — on install, an onboarding tab opens explaining the data flow and asks for your explicit consent. You can revoke consent any time from the extension popup.
What We Store Locally
Your AI consent flag and reader mode preferences. Saved locally on your device using chrome.storage.local.
This data never leaves your device. It is not sent to any server, and we have no way to access it.
Why We Need Each Permission
Simplify only asks for the permissions it needs to work. Here is what each one does:
activeTabRead the current page when you use text simplification or reader mode.
contextMenusAdd a 'Simplify selected text' option to the right-click menu.
scriptingInject scripts that detect text selection, show the simplify button, and enable reader mode.
storageSave your AI consent flag and reader mode preferences between sessions.
host_permissions: extensions-feedback-api-production.up.railway.appRequired so the service worker can call the AI service after you grant consent. This is the only host the extension contacts.
Third-Party Services
When you have granted consent and click 'Simplify Text', the text you selected is sent over HTTPS to our service at extensions-feedback-api-production.up.railway.app/v1/simplify. That service forwards the text to a third-party large language model provider (OpenAI / Anthropic) and returns a simplified version. We do not store the text after the request finishes. We do not log it, cache it, train models on it, or analyse it. The LLM sub-processor receives the text only for the duration of the API call required to produce a response. Reader mode does not connect to any server and works entirely on your device.
