What Keep Awake Does

Built with precision to solve real problems without adding complexity.

One-Click Activation

Toggle screen wake with a single click. Large power button in popup for instant on/off.

Timer Presets

Choose from 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, or Indefinite. Timer auto-disables when expired.

Layered Defense

Holds chrome.power and the Screen Wake Lock API in parallel, with a 60-second background refresh and a 30-second self-heal inside the active tab. Recovers automatically from dropped OS-level inhibits.

Tab Handoff

When you switch tabs the wake lock follows the active tab, so it never goes stale on a closed page.

Active/Inactive Icons

Toolbar icon changes between sun (active) and moon (inactive) so you know the status at a glance.

Stay Active in Web Apps

Optional toggle that fires synthetic mouse and scroll events to defeat in-page idle detectors in Slack, Teams, and similar web apps. Does not affect OS-level idle.

Perfect For

Keep Awake is designed for anyone who wants a better browsing experience. Here are just a few ways people use it.

Presentations and screen sharing

Long downloads and uploads

Following recipes while cooking

Reading long articles without the screen dimming

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Completely free, forever. No ads, no premium tier.
Keep Awake prevents the sleep signal but does not increase screen brightness or CPU usage. Battery impact is minimal compared to normal usage.
No. Keep Awake never edits your system power preferences. It asks the OS to inhibit display sleep while you have it on (via chrome.power and the Screen Wake Lock API), and releases that inhibit the moment you turn it off or the timer expires.
Chromium's keep-awake call goes through your desktop environment's screen-saver inhibit (D-Bus). GNOME, KDE, XFCE, Cinnamon, and most mainstream Linux desktops handle this out of the box. Minimal setups (bare LXQt, openbox, i3 without a power manager) don't — installing lxqt-powermanagement, xfce4-power-manager, or running caffeine fixes it. The popup shows a note on Linux pointing you to these.
Yes. Timer mode lets you keep awake for 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours, then it turns off automatically. You can also choose Indefinite for manual control.
Alt+Shift+K toggles Keep Awake on or off from anywhere. No need to open the popup.
Keep Awake works on normal http and https pages. It intentionally does not run on restricted pages like chrome:// URLs or the Chrome Web Store.
